I just returned from the Iceland Writer’s Retreat in Reykjavik. The organizers, Eliza Reid, and Erica Jacobs Green put together four incredible days of workshops and excursions that went well beyond my expectations. The additional relax and write days, an additional two days were wonderful as well.
I took two workshops with one of my literary favorites, Barbara Kingsolver. If she were a movie star, she would be Audrey Hepburn, or Merle Streep; she is a powerhouse of an author and a warm, delightful human being. It was a wonderful experience. I also got to be in two of Alison Pick’s workshops. She was great as well, and when she found out that it was my birthday she had the group sing to me. My last workshop was with Ruth Reichl; she is a delightful, fun, insightful and accessible woman.
Iceland is magical. Everyone seems to value writing and literacy. We were met with such grand enthusiasm. The weather changes every five minutes, moody and unpredictable, a nice change from my bland Southern California weather.
To spend six days with people who share your passion is an incredibly motivating experience. To have the level of talent that was there teaching the workshops was beyond measure.
I have come home with my vengeance, my passion inspired, fueled by my fellow participants, honed by my mentors. It was in a word- magical.
I will be back next year…
